Slightly chaotic, and very fun - we chat prank texting Dev Hynes, what makes the perfect night out, and non-musical obsessions all ahead of their set on RALLY's Channel stage this summer.

What’s the secret to being great friends and creative partners?

Clair Clair: Well, the friendship came first and over time led to our creative bond. I’m not sure if there’s any secret to making it all work, but maintaining and taking care of our friendship remains one of the most important parts of the job, because it’s at the core of everything.

Coco: I second that!

Has your friendship changed since you started making music together?

Clair Clair: Definitely. I mean, we’ve obviously gotten so much closer. We can basically read each other’s minds at this point.

Coco: Yes, in that we’re older now and like Claire said closer than ever but I feel like that’s a natural progression when you’ve known and worked with someone for 10+ years.  Too much fun and sooo many memories.

Do you think you could define a Coco & Clair Clair fan?

Coco: Absolutely not. I try to guess and then the most unassuming people will come up and say they’re big fans.

Clair Clair: Um, not really, no. I continue to be shocked by who shows up at our shows, who stops us on the streets, who DMs us, etc!

What’s the nichest reference in your music / lyrics?

Coco: Maybe Runescape in Cherub, which by the way is having a moment right now allegedly.

Clair Clair: I don’t think it gets any nicher than the people we’re writing about. We’ve written about some really random people and experiences.

You met on Twitter through mutual friends right? Pro or con social media?

Coco: Leaning towards con/anti these days.

Clair Clair: A little bit of both.

Last thing you saved on Instagram?

Clair Clair: A picture from an old surfing magazine.

IRL, DIY and underground spaces feel increasingly rare and precious. What makes a party or venue feel truly special?

Coco: Questions I ask myself before going out - how cozy can I be while also having the best time ever? Is the music good? Is it going to be ultra sceney/filled with “cool guys”? Or is everyone there to have a good time and maybe end up barefoot with a few things missing (but surely found the next day)? If the last question is yes and the one before it is no, and the music can get me shaking my tooshie… I’m there.

Clair Clair: Whenever I’ve had a problem with a venue or a party, it usually has something to do with the people running it or the people in the crowd. Someone being strict, judgmental, selfish, or just generally intense can really kill the mood for me.

So what makes a great night out?

Coco: Did someone say there is a Karaoke bar nearby….? Picklebacks included.

Clair Clair: Friends, good music, funny jokes, cocktails, a designated driver, and comfortable shoes.

The best afterparty city?

Clair Clair: Any city I’m in where the hotel I’m staying at’s pool stays open (or is somehow accessible) past 10 pm. I love swimming after a night out.

If you could raid one person’s wardrobe - living or dead - whose would it be?

Coco: Solange and Elizabeth Taylor in her heyday..

Clair Clair: Paloma Elsesser or a double blessing of Chloe Sevigny and her stylist, Haley Wollins.

Outside of music - someone you’d love to collaborate with?

Coco: Neeeeeeed a Summer House cameo in this lifetime. If I could choose one director to do a documentary on us…Werner Herzog. He’d eat that. Also I think we’d all have fun together. Has anyone ever had Werner Herzog and Summer House in the same sentence before?

Clair Clair: My number one dream is to be a Chanel girl. Working with Mike White and/or being in The White Lotus seems really fun. I’d also love to be a voice in a Pixar/DreamWorks movie and to do a horror movie with Mia Goth. If Summer House needs new cast members, I think Coco and I would be pretty good on that. I met Kyle Cooke the other night.

What’s a song you’ve had on repeat recently that people might not expect?

Coco: “The Toy - Demo” by Michael Jackson from some unreleased demos album I found. Also have this album called Gluon by hi-posi on repeat.

Clair Clair: I’m obsessed with “Best Years of My Life” by Pistol Annies right now, and I’ve been listening to Who’s The Clown by Audrey Hobert on repeat since it came out.

What’s something you've become obsessed with recently that has nothing to do with music?

Coco: Camping.

Clair Clair: Sleeping in overnight facemasks.

Favourite late-night snack?

Clair Clair: Usually a cheese quesadilla, but lately it’s been rainbow Goldfish and a cup of oatstraw tea.

Coco: Handful of raw chickpeas, but I’m usually asleep before 10 pm. A before-bed snack has been a glass of plain kefir with honey stirred in or non-dairy milk with a little chocolate stirred in ;)

Favourite thing to do when you’re in London?

Clair Clair: Probably shopping, I love shopping in London.

What drew you to RALLY?

Coco: We ❤️ Dev Hynes. I actually used to prank text him a lot when I was younger, I can’t reveal how I got his phone number but every holiday I’d send him chain texts like “GOBBLE GOBBLE BITCH, send this to 10 people or your turkey will not get ate this thanksgiving”. When he came to our album release party in NYC for our last album “Girl” I got the courage to come clean to him. I even admitted he probably had my number blocked, to which he said “I never block anyone” and pulled up our text thread. I’m so honored he invited us to play this after I told him my biggest secret, that I used to be an internet troll. Some could call this a full circle moment.

Clair Clair: To be honest, what drew me to the festival is that we were asked to play. But we’re big fans of both London and Dev Hynes, so how could we say no? I was thrilled when the request came in.

What’s the vibe you’re bringing to RALLY?

Coco: You’ve never seen girlies get down like us.

Clair Clair: They can expect a surprise or two… And the vibe I’m bringing is that I love being in the UK.

Does playing a festival like RALLY change how you approach a set compared to a club show or headline gig?

Clair Clair: Festivals are always a little bit strange because usually, at least at this stage of our career, although the audience might know who we are, they’re primarily there for other artists on the lineup. So there’s a vibe of, like, trying to win them over, which is not the case when we’re headlining. We’re a lot sillier and more chaotic when we’re playing a club/headline show, but there’s definitely a freedom in performing for people who have no idea who we are, so I try to lean into that. But yeah, it can feel like singing at a high school talent show against your will, which is a very awkward and unsettling feeling.

What does the underground get right?

Clair Clair: I think the freedom and chaos that underground spaces allow for – whether intentionally or not – is the hardest thing for festivals and larger venues to imitate. The rigidity of the more official spaces can really suck the life out of a performance and make it hard for both the performers and the audience to feel comfortable letting loose. Some of my favorite shows are still the house shows we played in our early days, when people were climbing through windows because there wasn’t enough room inside to open the front door, or when the crowds were so wild that we’d have to stand on the amps just to avoid getting slammed around. Now there’s at least, like, 10 feet between the nearest crowd member and us.
